Flemington-Kensington Church News, March 1920
61605 - Dvr Stewart R. Dunn, 1st Motor Transport and Service Coy, left on board the "Barambah" on 31/1/18, as a Corporal of the 12th General Service Group. The trip was a good one as far as Cape Town, but after leaving that place the influenza broke out with very fatal results, many of the boys going under before reaching Sierra Leone. Freetown, the capital, is a coaling station, but owing to the epidemic on board no leave was granted and the coaling had to he done by the Soldiers. Sierra Leone was formerly known as the "White Man's Grave," but much has recently been done to lessen the dangers of the low-lying tropical coast, especially in regard to the mosquito pest.
After disembarkation at Tilbury Docks on the Thames he was camped at Hurdcott and Sutton Veney. In February he was sent across the Channel and joined the Motor Transport Service which gave him an opportunity of seeing the celebrated battle fields of France and Belgium, and a number of the cities and towns. All holiday leave was spent in Scotland except one stay in London during the peace celebrations. The return voyage was made on the "Plassy", the route being via the Suez Canal, calling at Bombay and Colombo. At the latter place he had leave and visited Kandy, the old capital of Ceylon. It is near the centre of the island and about 75 miles by rail from Colombo. The tropical scenery is magnificent. He arrived home on 25th October and glad to see again the familiar faces and to renew old associations.
