Trathan was assigned to various hospitals in Victoria - Bendigo, Ascot Vale and McLeod - prior to embarkation.  He was promoted to Corporal on 8 September 1916, and again to Acting Sergeant on 1 October 1916.  He embarked, however, as a Private - and possibly took that drop in rank to get himself onto a ship.    He was promoted again to Extra Regimental  Sergeant on 8 April 1918 while attached for clerical duty at the Senior Medical Office.
