Mrs. H. Williams, of 2884 Federal road, Kalgoorlie, is in receipt of two cards from her brother, Private John Cowden, 28th Battalion, A.I.F., who is now a prisoner of war, in Germany. One card, dated March 18, comes from the Stendal, and the other from Wittenburg. Writing from Stendal, Private Cowden says : — ''Just a line hoping you are all well at Kalgoorlie. I suppose you will be surprised to hear from me. Anyhow, I am still alive. I was taken prisoner on November 16. I am camped with Victor Trengrove, with whom I used to go to school in Kalgoorlie. He has been looking after me since I came out of hospital.'' The card from Wittenburg states: — 'I am getting on alright since I came out of hospital. I am on the land, working, which suits me. Victor Trengrove and I are working together, with another Australian.'
