REPORTS OF EXPERIENCES.

The following extracts from letters tell of the experiences of Y.M.C.A. secretaries with the  Australian Imperial Force:

........

Frank Vaughan, Rollestone Camp.- Last Sunday our service was the largest we have had since I have been here, almost every seat being occupied. The singing was hearty and impressive. and after my address, with the exception of  about six, every man stood up and confessed acceptance of and allegiance to Christ.

A DEAD SOLDIER'S BIBLE

One instance of the many kindly and thoughtful acts the YMCA is doing on behalf of our lads on active service is afforded in a letter received by Miss Ross, of Bourke-street, from the Australian Y.M.C.A. Base Depot in France regarding her brother, the late Pte. A. H. Ross. 36th Battalion. The writer, Mr F. A. Vaughan, secretary at the  depot, in his letter, dated December 13, says:—"Dear Miss Ross,—lt is with very deep regret that I have to convey to you the sad information that your brother, Pte. A. H. Ross, was killed in action on Passchendaele Ridge on October 13 or 14 last." The writer says the information was given to him by Pte. W. A. Little, 33rd Battalion, who also handed him the deceased soldier's Bible and pocket book, which Miss Ross has since received. Mr Vaughan expressed his sympathy with Miss Ross and her mother (Mrs Smith, of Hunter-street), and added: "You have great consolation in knowing that your brother died in a noble cause and made the greatest sacrifice a man can make, as he gave his life, like Christ, for his friends. It is a source of comfort and joy to know he had his Bible with him to the last, and most assuredly died believing in its truths." The Bible is in splendid preservation, and shows no signs of the grim work of war. An official note from the British Red Cross base at Rouen states that Pte. Ross was killed on October 12.
