3900 Sapper James Hastie Wardrop and

10899 Sapper Horace George Tichborn,

Signal subsection, Attached 6th Army Brigade, Australian Field Artillery.

On 10th August 1918 at Harbonnieres these men were the Headquarters Linesman on duty on lines to various Units.  During the evening the area was subjected to a constant bombardment with bombs by hostile aeroplanes the fire being very demoralising in the vicinity of the village and many casualties being caused to personnel and horses.  Throughout the whole period with utter disregard to their personal safety these two men remained out in the open repairing the lines and endeavouring to keep open the communications to the various Units.  They did this with utter disregard of personal danger and at the greatest risk and successfully that when the bombing ceased communication was almost immediately restored to the whole of the Group working under the Headquarters.  They had previously been brought to notice for good work on the 9th August in maintaining under fire a forward exchange close to the Batteries in the open in a shell hole during the moving fight and which was of the greatest value to the Group.  Throughout the recent fighting they have displayed determinations and bravery.
