A VIOLENT SON OF MARS
At the Essendon Court on Thursday last, a young man named Robert Fawcett, who was attired in the uniform of the Australian Expeditionary Forces, was presented on charges of behaving offensively and assaulting Constable R. Stanford while executing his duty. The prosecuting constable stated that on the evening of the 5th inst., defendant was making himself obnoxious to pedestrians in Puckle street, Moonee Ponds, and on being spoken to Fawcett, who was in military uniform, used offensive and obscene language, and called upon other soldiers in the vicinity to assist him in "knocking the copper out," an invitation to which the other uniformed men did not respond. Stanford proceeded to arrest the offender, who resisted violently, struck the constable, and created a disgraceful scene in the streets before he was eventually locked up. Mr. A. E. Young, J.P., said the Bench did not feel disposed to deal severely with defendant, as he was a soldier, but reminded Fawcett that he had been proved guilty of an offence punishable by a fine of £25 or imprisonment for three months. Defendant was fined £1 on each charge, in default seven days' imprisonment.
