Gillies attempted to enlist in March 1915, prior to the crisis at Gallipoli.  He spent three and a half years at the Central Flying School, Laverton before finally enlisting in the Australian Flying Corps in 1918.  He most likely had to get permission to enlist, probably having spent his time at Laverton training mechanics.
