After training in Egypt, for three months, Henry was promoted to Bombadier on 11 March 1916, and shortly afterwards embarked for France. The unit disembarked in Marseilles on 19 March 1916.    Henry was admitted to hospital at Rouen with bronchitis on 10 November 1916, and evacuated to England two days later. Some months later he was returned to Australia for discharge, it having been established that he suffered from asthma, and had done since before the war.  The asthma was determined to have been made worse by his service.  Discharged in Melbourne on 1 Nov 1917.
