LONE PINE MEMORIAL
Gilchrist E W Pte No 1750 Reported Missing KIA 27.8.15
Informant states that at the Suvla Bay Landing in August, at Anafarta, most of those killed in the 14th Btn were killed under the following circumstances: - The 'Retire' was sounded, and we had to retire leaving the dead and wounded behind. We carried those we could, and all who could walk followed behind, the remainder of the wounded we had to abandon. Amongst the latter was the above named Gilchrist, who was undoubtedly burnt to death". informant added that his chum who was a Londoner, whose name is unknown to the informant, tried to pull the casualty out of the fire, but failed, and himself was destroyed by shell fire.
Ref H Smith No 1816 14th Btn Capel Street N. Melbourne
--- Informant inquired of L/Cpl Jones of the 14th Btn who was in the Base Hospital about this casualty. He told informant that this man was missing after the Lonesome Pine charge, and no trace could be found of him.
