Major William Allan HAILES recommended for Distinguished Service Order.

On the 9th October 1917 at PASCHENDALE Ridge after the 20th Battalion attacked, this Medical Officer proceeded to the front line and attended four wounded men in the open during intense artillery and MG fire; he had them conveyed safely to cover.  During the whole operation his incessant work among the wounded was carried out with great gallantry and devotion to duty proving a factor which  stimulated the utmost effort from his stretcher bearers under most trying circumstances.

Recommended for Military Cross - not awarded

Capt W A HAILES

During an intense bombardment of SAUSAGE VALLEY between the hours of 3 pm & 5 pm on the 10th August 1916, several men of the brigade were wounded.  Captain HAILES traversed the whole VALLEY attending to the wounded, the fire of the enemy included the heaviest natures of shells; but this officer disregarding the fire carried out his work without delay.  On several other occasions during the 17 days the Brigade was in action, Captain HAILES distinguished himself by his devotion to duty, notwithstanding heavy enemy shelling.
